Rasmus Hojlund aimed a subtle dig at Marcus Rashford following Manchester United’s disastrous 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night. United are staring a Champions League group-stage exit in the face after Rashford’s red card switched the game on its head at Parken.

Erik ten Hag’s side produced their strongest performance of the season in the opening 40 minutes, cruising into a 2-0 lead through Hojlund’s brace.

The 20-year-old striker notched his fourth and fifth Champions League goals of the season against his former club, starting what promised to be a jubilant night for United.

But then Rashford harshly saw red after a VAR check for misplacing his foot onto a Copenhagen leg. Before half-time, it was 2-2.

Bruno Fernandes fired United back ahead with a 69th-minute penalty; then came another collapse.

Roony Bardghji, 17, became the youngest player to ever score against the Red Devils in the Champions League with his 87th-minute winner.

After full-time, Hojlund cut a frustrated figure as he assessed United’s ninth defeat in 17 games this term.

“Yeah, it is disappointing [the result]. I thought we started very well, to be honest. We controlled the game until the red card, and that changed the game,” Hojlund lamented.

“If you don’t look at the result and only take the first 20 minutes into account, I think we did quite well. I think we switched off a little bit.”

Hojlund added, with a slight smirk: “We did not think we were going to play a game with 10 men. Of course, it is also giving them some belief. I know how the crowd can help the team here, and it gave them a big boost.”

“We also did quite well at the beginning of the second half. We were composed on the ball.

“We kept switching the ball, and then we got the penalty to go in front again. But it’s unfortunate that we ended up with zero points again.”
