Braga goalkeeper Matheus has revealed that he received an offer from Manchester United over the summer. Erik ten Hag was desperate to bring in two new shot-stoppers before the start of the season, ultimately deciding to splash the cash on Andre Onana and sign Altay Bayindir as his No 2.

Onana has played a central role in United’s underwhelming start to the campaign, making several mistakes and costing his side points. However, the ex-Inter Milan star is not solely to blame for such a poor start to the season that has seen Ten Hag’s position in the Old Trafford dugout come under fire as numerous players are struggling to find form.

Though the ex-Ajax boss may be pondering how his side would have fared if he opted not to pursue Onana and pushed for Matheus instead. The 31-year-old has failed to keep a clean sheet in 10 appearances this season for Braga but has shone previously and earned plenty of plaudits in Portugal.

Speaking about how he spoke with Ten Hag over the summer after United tabled a bid for his services, Matheus told TNT Sports: “Moves you, buddy. Honestly, it does. So when you receive the contact and see that… The stamp there from a big European club, mate, whether you like it or not, it moves you.
