Casemiro is among the players whom Manchester United are considering for contract extensions in the coming months despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s concerns over the signing, according to reports. United are said to be preparing plans for the January transfer window, while Erik ten Hag wants to continue moulding his current squad.

The Red Devils completed a £70million deal to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid last summer after failing in a window-wide pursuit of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Many baulked at the mammoth transfer fee, given he was already 30 when he arrived at Old Trafford.

But Casemiro silenced the doubters with a sensational maiden season in England, helping United to Carabao Cup glory and a third-place Premier League finish, sealing a Champions League return.

Those concerns have re-emerged this term, though, with the 31-year-old failing to replicate his form, sparking unease that Ten Hag splashed £70m for just one season in return.

United handing Casemiro a four-year contract, with the option of a further year, suggested they didn’t believe that would be the case.

Imminent investor Sir Jim reportedly cited the signing of Casemiro when criticising United’s transfer strategy during his visit to Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training base in March.
