Chris Sutton has revealed his son died and was brought back to life when he was abroad with Celtic for a UEFA Cup tie.

Striker-turned-pundit Sutton was hailing the strength of Liverpool star Luis Diaz, who scored their equaliser against Luton at the weekend while his dad remains abducted in Colombia, when he opened up on the toughest moment in his own career.

He recalled the only game he ever missed, which was away at Valencia in the competition now known as the Europa League. Sutton had travelled to Spain with his Scottish side but didn't make it out on the pitch.

And that's because his prematurely born son James, who spent the first eight weeks of his life in hospital, was taken ill again at 28 weeks. Opening up on the It's All Kicking Off podcast, the 50-year-old said: "My wife was dropping the kids off at school.

"Little James was choking in the car, so my wife phoned me and we had an argument over the phone actually. I was saying 'take him home he'll be fine' but she didn't and her instinct was to take him to hospital, and that was a good thing she did do.

"When they got to hospital he stopped breathing and the doctor took him away and told my wife that he had died and they brought him back."

After a number of days on a life-support machine, thankfully James recovered and he's now a fully-fit 21-year-old. Sutton added: "When he started to improve, I actually found football really good to get away from it."

He can see similarities between his own situation and Diaz's, who insisted he wanted to return to the Liverpool matchday squad despite the uncertainty surrounding his dad.

"I think it's a massive strength of character, as much as anything. He might actually see going out and training and playing as a bit of escapism to try and take his mind off," Sutton said.

The latest on Diaz Sr is that his family are seeking confirmation from the ELN, the rebel group holding him captive, that he's still alive having yet failed to deliver on their promise of releasing him.
