Elite sport has a habit of bringing the best back to Earth and after Aston Villa\u2019s shock defeat at Nottingham Forest, Emi Martinez knows that feeling only too well.<\/p>\n<p>The Argentina star collected the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d\u2019Or ceremony last week after his brilliant displays helped his country win last year\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Those weeks in Qatar will be among Martinez\u2019s happiest memories yet he will want to forget his afternoon at the City Ground as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>With Villa trailing 1-0, Martinez\u2019s flew to his left to reach Orel Mangala\u2019s 25-yard effort early in the second half but failed to make a strong enough connection, causing the ball to spin back off the bar and into the net.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Forest already leading through Ola Aina\u2019s fifth-minute strike, Martinez\u2019s error left Villa with too much to do. It was only their third defeat in the league this season as Forest won for the first since their victory at\u00a0Chelsea on September 2.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/05\/15\/77425565-12712797-image-a-16_1699199799204.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Nottingham Forest defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/05\/16\/77425591-12712797-image-a-35_1699200464222.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Forest had the help from Emiliano Martinez, who tapped a long-range shot from Orel Mangala into the back of his own net<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/05\/15\/77424607-12712797-image-a-18_1699199815403.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Aina got the hosts off to a fast start scoring in the first five minutes of the match from long-range<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Forest\u2019s long run without a win had caused some unease among the hierarchy but this should bring back the smiles. As boss Steve Cooper leapt about in his technical area to gee up the crowd during stoppage time, he reflected the spirit of his team<\/p>\n<p>Following last weekend\u2019s 3-0 defeat at Liverpool, Cooper made a change in goal, giving a first league start to summer signing Odysseas Vlachodimos and leaving former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner on the bench.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper arranged his team in a 4-1-4-1 formation and allowed Villa most of the ball, using their own pace on the flanks to cause problems on the break. And the plan worked a treat when Forest took the lead inside five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Elanga escaped on the left and found Harry Toffolo inside him, who played the ball square to Aina. It was a sweet strike that flew in from 22 yards, though Unai Emery would have been unhappy with Douglas Luiz\u2019s failure to close down his opponent. Villa keeper Emi Martinez may also have had his view blocked by Luiz and Pau Torres.<\/p>\n<p>Villa were lucky soon afterwards when Nicolas Dominguez and Taiwo Awoniyi \u2013 making his first start for more than a month after injury \u2013 hustled Boubacar Kamara into a mistake on the edge of his own box. Referee Jarred Gillett rescued Kamara by calling a foul as Awoniyi shaped to shoot, leaving Cooper furious.<\/p>\n<p>Emery\u2019s plan relies on full-backs Lucas Digne and Matt Cash providing width as John McGinn and Nicolo Zaniolo drift infield. But Toffolo and Aina were doing a fine job of keeping Digne and Cash quiet, while Villa\u2019s high defensive line left them vulnerable as Forest looked to play forward early.<\/p>\n<p>Zaniolo\u2019s mishit cross nearly sneaked in at the near post and Elanga did well to block Digne\u2019s volley at the far post. Then came Villa\u2019s best chance when Murillo \u2013 who was otherwise outstanding before the break \u2013 was robbed by Ollie Watkins. Watkins fed Moussa Diaby and the Frenchman played in Zaniolo but his shot was too close to Vlachodimos.<\/p>\n<p>Villa\u2019s frustration was growing and there was a heated exchange between Luiz and Torres shortly before the interval \u2013 though there was still time for another moment of controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Awoniyi was bundled over by Kamara inside the box only for the play to be brought back for an offside against Dominguez. Toffolo\u2019s cross spun off Cash and the bounce deceived Ezri Konsa, allowing Awoniyi to work the ball back Mangala.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though Martinez tried to palm away the midfielder\u2019s 25-yard effort, he could not stop it spinning back off the bar and over the line.
