{"id":298246,"date":"2023-11-04T22:24:32","date_gmt":"2023-11-04T22:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=298246"},"modified":"2023-11-04T22:24:32","modified_gmt":"2023-11-04T22:24:32","slug":"violent-clashes-in-rio-continue-as-police-fire-at-fluminense-ultras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/soccer\/violent-clashes-in-rio-continue-as-police-fire-at-fluminense-ultras\/","title":{"rendered":"Violent clashes in Rio continue as police fire at Fluminense ultras"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Violent clashes in Rio de Janeiro continue as police fire at Fluminense ultras ahead of Libertadores final showdown with Boca Juniors<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fluminense and Boca Juniors are set to go head-to-head in the\u00a0Libertadores final<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tensions have been rising in build-up and police fired at fans hours before match<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Big debates on Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal on It&#8217;s All Kicking Off podcast\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fluminense ultras clashed with police in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Libertadores showdown with Boca Juniors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The final of South American club football&#8217;s premier competition is set to be played at 8pm Saturday night GMT, at the iconic Maracana stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tension have been rising in the build-up to the match and violent clashes continued hours before kick-off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Videos of the incident, which took place in streets close to the Stadium, have emerged and it appeared to show police firing at Fluminense ultras.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The clash required police to wear full riot gear as they were attacked by the ultras who were not sighted in the footage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/04\/19\/77405707-12710821-image-a-6_1699125717162.jpg\" height=\"374\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Fluminense ultras clashed with police in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Libertadores final<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/04\/19\/77405711-12710821-image-a-3_1699125319728.jpg\" height=\"355\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Police, who were in riot gear, formed a line and appeared to be seen firing back at fans\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/04\/19\/77405727-12710821-image-a-4_1699125361634.jpg\" height=\"355\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0Fluminense were seen running back to safety as the scrambled to get out of firing line<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Police then formed two lines as they fired back, with other\u00a0Fluminense fans seen running back to safety and covering their noses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The latest incident comes after armed\u00a0police fired rubber bullets and threw tear gas at Boca Juniors fans on Copacabana beach on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite Fluminense being Rio-based, there has been a huge influx of Boca fans with some 100,000 Xeneize supporters overrunning the Brazilian city in the build-up to the clash, hoping to see their side win a seventh Copa Libertadores title.<\/p>\n<p>CONMEBOL themselves &#8211; the governing body for South American football &#8211; released a statement condemning the violence between fan groups, as well as issuing a call for supporters to &#8216;share together the moments of joy and celebration&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The Libratodes final\u00a0<span>will see Boca bid to try and win their seventh title, with Fluminense chasing their first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The competition is similar to Europe&#8217;s Champions League tournament, but is played before the end of the domestic season in both Argentina and Brazil.
