Julian Alvarez was so wrapped up in helping Manchester City destroy Bournemouth that he didn’t realise he’d had a tooth knocked out.

Jeremy Doku was the architect of an emphatic success, scoring their opener and having a hand in four other goals as City overpowered the Cherries 6-1. Bernardo Silva twice benefited from Doku’s work with a brace while Phil Foden, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake also got on the scoresheet at the Etihad.

Luis Sinisterra grabbed a Bournemouth consolation but the only real concern for City was an injury to Erling Haaland, who hit the woodwork early on before hobbling off at half-time. There was a knock for another City striker as Alvarez ended the Premier League clash with fewer teeth than he started it with.

Not that the Argentine World Cup winner knew anything about it until his missing gnasher was spotted by Silva as City celebrated their second goal. The gap in Alvarez’s teeth was clearly visible but he only became aware when his team-mate pointed it out. Alvarez seemed both surprised and amused, holding his hand over his mouth briefly.

He was substituted with 19 minutes left but his withdrawal is not thought to be related to any dental issues. Speaking after the match, City boss Pep Guardiola admitted Bournemouth had surprised him with how they lined up.

He said: "We didn't expect the way they played with five at the back. We scored in the right moments, second half they started better than us. Man to man they were aggressive, when a team is losing 3-0 and they go to man to man and go for it I have a lot of respect for that."

On Haaland’s injury, he added: “Twist in the ankle, we didn't want to take risks with him he didn't feel comfortable. He'll be back maybe Tuesday but maybe next Sunday."
