Scott McTominay has spoken out about a sign asking for Manchester United to ‘play like they mean it’ at Craven Cottage. The Red Devils went on to beat Fulham 1-0, with Bruno Fernandes’ late goal providing decisive in what is likely to be an important three points for Erik ten Hag.

United have endured a miserable start to the season, with their problems being epitomised recently with crushing defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Newcastle. Pressure has mounted on the shoulders of Ten Hag as a result, with reports speculating that he is starting to lose the faith of his players.

Supporters have understandably become angry with the team, and a crop of fans made their frustrations clear with a rallying call prior to United’s match against Fulham. The five-word message of ‘play like you mean it’ appeared to have its desired effect as Fernandes struck a 91st-minute winner to send the away supporters into a frenzy.

Asked about the sign after the match, McTominay said: “We saw the banner before the game, and a few of us said to the rest of the lads that these fans pay good money to come down and see us play. They support us every single week and we just want to repay them the best we can.

We can go on, kick on and do better.”

The victory means that United move up to sixth in the Premier League, though Ten Hag will be aware that his side will need to improve massively if they are to break back into the Champions League places.
