Liverpool remain in contact with Kylian Mbappe’s camp in the hope of beating Real Madrid to a blockbuster summer transfer, according to reports. The Paris Saint-Germain forward is in the final year of his contract and previously made it clear that he has no intention of sticking around in France.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is believed to have held talks with Mbappe as far back as 2017, when he was still an up-and-comer with AS Monaco. Six years down the line, the flying forward is set to be back on the market after refusing to extend his stay at PSG.

It had long been expected that Mbappe would ditch Ligue 1 in favour of La Liga, but he rejected the Spanish giants Real Madrid to sign a lucrative contract extension at the Parc des Princes last summer.

Los Blancos are still believed to be in the mix, with club president Florentino Perez intent on signing Mbappe instead of Erling Haaland, but Liverpool could be dark horses in the transfer race.

According to L’Equipe, Liverpool were in ‘constant contact’ with Mbappe’s entourage back in 2021, and the lines of communication have never been cut off completely. The Reds are reportedly reluctant to give up on their pursuit, with Klopp’s admiration for the player well documented.

A meeting between the Reds manager and Mbappe during his teenage years is believed to have instilled a quiet confidence in senior figures at Anfield that a high-profile transfer deal may be possible.
