Manchester United chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough could be left with egg on their face should they sack Erik ten Hag after a dismal start to the season. The Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday after a humbling 3-0 defeat by Newcastle at Old Trafford and the pressure continues to mount on the Dutch boss.

United have lost half of their 10 Premier League games this season and suffered Champions League defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, with supporters growing increasingly frustrated at the style of play and questions are becoming more frequent over whether Ten Hag can turn the situation around.

It marks a stark contrast from just a few weeks ago, when CEO Arnold and football director Murtough were reportedly planning to offer Ten Hag a new contract at the club. 90min claimed in September that the pair were very happy with Ten Hag and he continued to have their full support, despite a poor start to the season.

If discussions can range from wanting to offer Ten Hag a new contract to sacking him in the span of just over a month, it surely would reflect poorly on the two chiefs behind the scenes. This comes at a time of uncertainty in the boardroom, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe hoping to purchase a 25 per cent stake in United and take control of the sporting side of the club.
