Fast forward to their Carabao Cup fourth round reunion at Old Trafford tonight and since Wembley it has been 36 games played, 20 wins and 13 defeats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Times &#8211; and moods &#8211; have changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/01\/12\/77267449-12697417-image-a-37_1698840612297.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Erik ten Hag has overseen a collapse in form since Man United won the Carabao Cup this year<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/01\/13\/68101689-12697417-Manchester_United_claimed_their_first_trophy_since_2017_with_vic-a-44_1698845553062.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>United won their first trophy since 2017 with victory over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Pinpointing the exact reason, or reasons, behind the 17 per cent drop in win rate is not easy.<\/p>\n<p>Injuries certainly have not helped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lisandro Martinez suffered a season-ending injury at the back end of last term against Sevilla, and United would go on to lose 7-0 at Liverpool the week after he went down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He started the beginning of this season clearly still feeling the effects of that issue and he is now sidelined again. It will come, I am certain.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a defiant message but how Ten Hag can be &#8216;certain&#8217; that things will turn around given the evidence on the pitch has not, for a number of months now, backed it up, is quite something.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just take goals scored as a metric to compare the two teams tonight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This season alone in the league, Newcastle have scored 26 goals. Manchester United, by contrast, have 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>United have also conceded five more (16) than Newcastle and so are leakier at the back and blunter up front. Losing their way should come as little surprise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There is no point in feeling sorry for ourselves at this moment in time,&#8217; Ten Hag adds in his programme notes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Nobody at this club enjoys defeat, particularly in a Manchester derby like last Sunday, but everything we have achieved together so far has been built on looking forward, which means we have to move on quickly from what happens, whether it is positive or negative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We have never spent too long enjoying our victories, so we will not spend too much time thinking about our losses. We must always look forward, together.
