Lionel Messi has fans questioning whether he dressed up like darts royalty Bobby George for Halloween.

For the eighth time in his unparalleled career, Messi lifted the Ballon d’Or in Paris on Monday after cementing his legacy as the greatest player to ever play football. The 36-year-old put the cherry on top of his incredible career by being recognised yet again at the awards after he lifted the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year.

And off the back of the awards, Adidas posted their congratulations to their poster boy on social media. Messi posed with his head rested in his hands which saw gold rings on eight of his fingers – representing the amount of Ballon d’Ors he’s won.

But the post that was captioned: “Countless memories, eight rings, zero doubt" was hilariously trolled on social media as fans were quick to question whether in fact, Messi was just dressing up as darts legend Bobby George, who was famous for wearing gold rings and gold necklaces during his career. A comment on Twitter read: “Dressed as Bobby George for Halloween.”

Aptly nicknamed ‘The King of Bling’, George won the News of the World Darts Championship in 1979 and 1986 and was twice runner-up in the BDO World Championship to Eric Bristow in 1980 and John Part in 1994. But his incredible style at the oche is still unrivalled to this day.

Do you think Lionel Messi could pass as Bobby George’s doppelganger? Let us know in the comments section.

Although he was one of the first superstars of darts, George never played in the PDC, which formed as a breakaway from the BDO in 1992. Despite the attempts of Phil Taylor to get Bobby Dazzler on board, he was earning good money from his other jobs working in the brewery business.

He previously said: "There was Phil Taylor and his dad there and he came round with a bit of scroll paper to sign it. I said 'what's that?' He said we're starting a union so we'd have more television tournaments.

"It didn't bother me that as I was doing work for the breweries and earning good money. I didn't chase trophies, you can't eat trophies can you. You can't go into a restaurant and say I just want to order a trophy, give us a bill. They'd tell you to f*** off wouldn't they so I went the money side."
