Tottenham have a four-man shortlist of defenders they hope to sign in January to help strengthen their title charge. The north Londoners have got off to a fantastic start to their Premier League campaign with Ange Postecologou’s men currently sitting at the top of the table after ten games.

According to Give Me Sport, the Tottenham board have identified that they need to bring in another centre back with Eric Dier linked with a move away in the winter transfer window. Versatile Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly is the first player on Daniel Levy and Co.’s shortlist.

The 25-year-old can play at centre-back and left-back – and has been impressive for the Cherries so far this season. Tottenham have reportedly completed “detailed checks” on the Englishman after attempting to sign him in the summer for £20million.

They are set to go back in for him at the start of next year as Postecoglou looks to bolster his backline. Trevoh Chalobah, who will be allowed to leave Chelsea in January, is also a potential option to fill in at the back and in defensive midfield.

Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have been exceptional in the holding midfield role but Tottenham need one more defensively-minded player in the centre of the park. Ko Itakura is another player that can fill that void. Tottenham are understood to be great admirers of the 26-year-old, who plys his trade at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Like Chalobah, Itakura mainly plays as a centre-back but can also fill in at defensive midfield. The Japan international used to be on the books at Manchester City but was unable to break into the first team after spells on loan at FC Groningen and Schalke.
