Lawes reviews England's Rugby World Cup semi-final loss to South Africa

New Zealand and South Africa are set to go head to head in the Rugby World Cup final on Saturday. Both countries have won the tournament a joint-record three times in the past, which means the winners will become the most successful team in Rugby World Cup history. And the teams will also be hoping to get their hands on plenty of prize money.

How much was the prize money in 2019?

According to The Telegraph, the prize money for the winning team at the 2019 Rugby World Cup was £325,000. South Africa were handed that figure by World Rugby after they defeated England 32-12 in the final at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama.

World Rugby never publicise the prize money they dish out. However, several outlets have reported that the amount of cash teams at this tournament will get their hands on has increased significantly. According to Yahoo, the winner of the 2023 Rugby World Cup will receive a whopping £4.8million, while the runners-up will get a cheque for £2.5m.

The report says England and Argentina will both be given £1.2m for reaching the semi-finals, while the quarter-finalists stand to be rewarded with £600k. And teams that were knocked out in the pool stages will get a windfall of £250k. If those figures are in fact accurate, it would represent a huge uplift from four years ago and would hand New Zealand and South Africa an even bigger incentive to win the tournament.

How much do winning players earn?

When Rugby World Cup winnings are handed to each country’s governing body, they can decide how they distribute the cash. Some countries may choose to reward players handsomely, while others could opt to invest the bulk of the cash into growing the sport at grassroots level.

Aside from the World Rugby winnings, governing bodies can also dish out their own prize money to players. In 2019, England promised to give all 32 members of their squad a share of a £5m bonus pot if they returned from Japan with the Webb Ellis Cup in tow. And head coach Eddie Jones was also in line to receive around £1m.
