{"id":297398,"date":"2023-10-28T18:24:38","date_gmt":"2023-10-28T18:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=297398"},"modified":"2023-10-28T18:24:38","modified_gmt":"2023-10-28T18:24:38","slug":"england-boss-shaun-wane-labels-tonga-disgraceful-after-14-4-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/rugby-union\/england-boss-shaun-wane-labels-tonga-disgraceful-after-14-4-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"England boss Shaun Wane labels Tonga &apos;disgraceful&apos; after 14-4 victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>England boss Shaun Wane labels Tonga &#8216;disgraceful&#8217; after 14-4 victory over the Pacific Islanders to clinch series win in Huddersfield\u00a0 \u00a0<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>England wrapped up series win over Tonga thanks to\u00a0Matty Ashton&#8217;s two tries\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tonga boss Kristian Woolf had questioned the speed of the ruck and officiating\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shaun Wane was left furious and revealed prior comments served as a motivator\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Furious Shaun Wane labelled Tonga &#8216;disgraceful&#8217; after England clinched a series win over the Pacific Islanders courtesy of Matty Ashton&#8217;s first Test match tries.<\/p>\n<p>Warrington Wolves winger Ashton, 25, showcased his finishing skills with a clinical first-half double which laid the platform for victory in Huddersfield.<\/p>\n<p>It followed success for Wane&#8217;s men in last Sunday&#8217;s opener at St Helens and another win at Headingley next Saturday would complete a Test series whitewash.<\/p>\n<p>Yet rather than bask in the glory of another brutal, bruising win against a Tonga side packed with NRL-based players, England coach Wane was almost beside himself afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Tonga counterpart Kristian Woolf had questioned the speed of the ruck and how the first Test was officiated by the English officials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/28\/17\/77118299-0-image-a-1_1698511473207.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Furious Shaun Wane labelled Tonga &#8216;disgraceful&#8217; after England clinched a series victory\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/28\/17\/77118457-0-image-a-3_1698511674578.jpg\" height=\"432\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Matty Ashton, 25, showcased his finishing skills with a clinical first-half double<\/p>\n<p>Wane took exception to the former St Helens boss&#8217; comments and additional Tongan complaints about the pitch at St Helens.<\/p>\n<p>Wane said after Saturday&#8217;s win: &#8216;I&#8217;m really, really proud because I was absolutely desperate to win that game today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Some of the things that have been said this week about my players, my team and my mates really upset me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Some of it was disgraceful and that was a massive motivator for us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Tonga wanted a firmer ground, they had every excuse about the ruck and our referees cheating.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;To prove them wrong by a firm pitch, with a really slow ruck \u2013 they couldn&#8217;t have everything their own way again \u2013 after they showed a lot of disrespect was really pleasing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;d be interested to see what their next excuse is.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/28\/17\/77118475-0-image-a-4_1698511763930.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Tonga boss Kristian Woolf (Second left) had questioned the speed of the ruck and officiating<\/p>\n<p>Wane used an old school motivational technique by plastering Tonga&#8217;s comments on walls within the England camp.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;There has been posters all the over dressing room, so this was the easiest day ever.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The lads were angry with all their comments and we spoke about them all week. We want to finish the job at Headingley now.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Woolf, who won three Super League titles with Saints between 2020 and 2023, had no issue with Wane&#8217;s comments.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;Good on them if they did [put posters up] \u2013 there are no dramas there at all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We spoke to the referees through the week and the question was &#8216;do we need to get off quicker or does England need to stay on longer?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We were told we need to stay on longer and I thought we adjusted a lot better today. This series isn&#8217;t over yet.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/28\/17\/77118479-0-image-a-5_1698511808558.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Wane used an old school motivational technique by plastering Tonga&#8217;s comments on walls<\/p>\n<p>England ran out worthy victors after Ashton finished off a neat handling culminated in him taking Harry Newman&#8217;s pass and diving over in the right corner.<\/p>\n<p>Ashton then displayed his predatory instincts again by pouncing on Mikey Lewis&#8217; clever grubber kick to make it 12-0 at the break.<\/p>\n<p>It was a sweet moment for Ashton, a late developer who made his name in the second-tier Championship with Swinton Lions before being signed by Warrington in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;That&#8217;s what I&#8217;m there to do and I could have had a couple more but made a couple of errors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m over the moon because Tonga are probably the biggest players I&#8217;ve come up against.
