Paul Heckingbottom could lose his job as Sheffield United manager if they lose at Arsenal on Saturday, with Chris Wilder likely to take over in the event they extend their miserable run at the Emirates Stadium.

Mail Sport revealed last month that Wilder had been sounded out over a shock return to Bramall Lane and since then Heckingbottom’s side have lost a further five straight games, including 8-0 at home to Newcastle United.

Despite an appetite to reward Heckingbottom with time following their promotion to the Premier League, sources have strongly indicated that this weekend could be the 46-year-old’s final fixture in charge if it results in a ninth defeat in 10.

Wilder is understood to be the lead name on a shortlist of three, having patched up the fractious relationship he shares with the owner, Prince Abdullah.

The 56-year-old, who made more than 100 appearances for United in two spells as a player, achieved great managerial success at the club between 2016 and 2021, a period in which he led United out of League One before securing promotion to the Premier League in 2019.

He has been out of work since leaving Watford at the conclusion of his short-term contract in the summer.

A move to oust Heckingbottom this week would be a departure from the defiance shown by CEO Stephen Bettis last month.

‘He’s done a great job,’ Bettis told local reporters. ‘Everyone is really happy with what Paul has done.

‘He’s been excellent. He’s smart and thinks about the big picture. He understands the needs and wants of a football club, not just the wants and needs of a manager.’
