Exclusive: Shaun Wright-Phillips previews Manchester derby

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has hit out at the club for not “behaving” like a world-class organisation in a worrying message to potential minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The British billionaire is hoping to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils, but Scholes has insisted that there is a lot of work to do to return United to their glory days as he ranted about the current state of his former club.

Speaking ahead of their Champions League tie with Copenhagen on Tuesday, Scholes lambasted United for their dramatic fall from grace over the years. He believes that they are “underperforming in every single area” and brought up the under-19 team’s recent defeat to their Danish counterparts as evidence that Ratcliffe will have a lot of work to do.

“He’s got a lot to do at this football club,” Scholes told TNT Sports when asked about the prospect of Ratcliffe taking charge of the sporting side of United. “For me, this is a world-class football club but they’re not acting like it, they’re not behaving like it. That goes from the senior team, right down to the youth players. I watched the youth lot today, they lost to Copenhagen. It’s not right.

“They’re underperforming in every single area – the stadium needs renovating, I love this stadium but if people are calling for it, it has to happen. The training ground probably isn’t up to standard either. The only thing the club has going for it right now is the history and he’ll need to bring in new players, new staff all the way through the club in order to make new history.

“This is the biggest football club in the world, he has to change almost everything. Everyone right now is underperforming, the players, the staff, the whole team are underperforming. It’s a massive job to come into – the fans might be happy if the 25 per cent acts as a stepping stone for him to fully take over the club because they don’t want the Glazers here.”

Scholes took umbrage with the scenes behind closed doors at United and said they are also “bang average” on the pitch this season. United have lost four of their nine Premier League games so far this season and entered the match against Copenhagen with two defeats in two games in Europe.
