{"id":296866,"date":"2023-10-23T10:25:06","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T10:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=296866"},"modified":"2023-10-23T10:25:06","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T10:25:06","slug":"england-call-up-brydon-carse-to-replace-the-injured-reece-topley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/%d1%81ricket\/england-call-up-brydon-carse-to-replace-the-injured-reece-topley\/","title":{"rendered":"England call up Brydon Carse to replace the injured Reece Topley"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>England call up Brydon Carse to World Cup squad to replace leading wicket-taker Reece Topley, with the seamer ruled out for the rest of the tournament after breaking his finger<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>England call up Brydon Carse to replace Reece Topley in their World Cup squad<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Topley broke his finger\u00a0in Saturday&#8217;s record-breaking defeat by South Africa\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>REPORT: Woeful England slumped to their heaviest-ever ODI defeat in India\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>England have called up Brydon Carse to their World Cup squad in India, with Joe Root claiming the seamer could inherit Liam Plunkett&#8217;s mantle as master of the middle overs.<\/p>\n<p>Struggling England lost their leading wicket-taker during Saturday&#8217;s record-breaking defeat by South Africa, when Reece Topley fractured his left index finger fielding off his own bowling.<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Matthew Mott initially suggested there was no guarantee another seamer would be brought in as his replacement, inviting the likes of Jason Roy, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed into the conversation, but Carse&#8217;s selection maintains the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old was the next seamer in line and may have made a stronger push for the original 15-man squad had he not suffered injury issues of his own over the summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was ultimately overtaken by Surrey&#8217;s Gus Atkinson, but will now link up with the group in Bengaluru.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/23\/10\/76885367-12661417-image-a-17_1698053590382.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>England call up Brydon Carse (pictured) to replace Reece Topley in their World Cup squad<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/23\/10\/76885223-12661417-image-a-11_1698053377749.jpg\" height=\"410\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Topley fractured his left index finger in Saturday&#8217;s record-breaking defeat by South Africa<\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s game against Sri Lanka will probably come too soon for Carse, who has taken 14 wickets in 12 ODIs to date, but with questions surrounding a team that has lost three out of their first four games he will hope to push hard for a chance.<\/p>\n<p>England have never quite found their heir to Plunkett, the 2019 World Cup winner who nailed a tricky role through the middle of the innings, and Root believes Carse could carry that baton.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Brydon is a brilliant all-round package. He scores some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and he&#8217;s got a unique wicket-taking ability,&#8217; said Root.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He&#8217;s got that Ben Stokes element to him where you sometimes feel like nothing is happening and then he&#8217;ll pick up wickets, almost in a &#8216;Junior Plunkett&#8217; kind of way.
