William Gallas is concerned by Kai Havertz’s start at Arsenal, and feels his former club made a ‘mistake’ signing the Germany international this summer.

After three years at Chelsea which saw him win the Champions League and Club World Cup, Havertz joined Arsenal for £65m in July.

Havertz has featured regularly for Mikel Arteta’s men in the opening weeks of the season, but has struggled to nail down a position in the side and only has one goal to his name so far – a penalty in a routine 3-0 win against Bournemouth.

Former Arsenal captain Gallas has not been convinced by Havertz and believes he is yet to make a positive impression at the Emirates.

‘I’m not impressed with Kai Havertz so far,’ he told Lord Ping. ‘He’s done nothing since he joined Arsenal.

Kai Havertz has had a difficult start to life at Arsenal after joining from Chelsea this summer

Mikel Arteta has played Havertz regularly, but the German international has only scored once

Former Arsenal captain William Gallas thinks Havertz is already in ‘trouble’ at his new club

Your browser does not support iframes.

‘He may have scored, but that was only because Martin Odegaard let him take a penalty! Havertz hasn’t done anything yet, and I think he’s in trouble.’

Arsenal beat Manchester City before the international break to move level on points with north London rivals Tottenham at the top of the table.

However, doubts remain over whether Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah will score enough goals to fire them to their first title in two decades this season.

Gallas is adamant Arsenal should have spent big on a goalscorer this summer, and fails to see Havertz being the player that can find the back of the net regularly to take the club to the next level after their second-placed finish last term.

‘I don’t think Arsenal should have signed Kai Havertz. I think that was a mistake. If you spent £60million on a striker, you expect them to score at least 15 goals in a season! I don’t think that’ll happen,’ he added.

‘Arsenal don’t have time! The season may be long, but clubs need results straight away. Havertz was at Chelsea for three years and knows the Premier League well.

‘It may take a while to settle into a new team, but he already lived in London! Players need to adapt immediately – they don’t have time.’

For now, Havertz retains the faith of Arteta, and will get the chance to start proving Gallas wrong when he returns to Chelsea for the first time tomorrow as Arsenal face the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!
