Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is to take a step back from being involved in transfer dealings, according to reports. He was forced to play a key part in the summer window but three recent appointments mean he can focus on other matters.

Levy has been at Spurs since 1998 and became chairman three years later. He has faced criticism of late from Tottenham supporters for making what they feel were incorrect managerial appointments.

Fans throughout last season were often heard chanting “We want Levy out” amid the growing frustration at having not won a trophy since 2008. A jibe often labelled at the 61-year-old was that he did not support the club’s manager enough in the transfer market.

The appointment of Fabio Paratici as managing director of football in the summer of 2021 was a welcome addition to help with the recruitment side. The Italian was forced to resign in April this year after losing an appeal against his 30-month FIFA ban following his involvement in false accounting at his previous club Juventus.

But The Athletic says that is now likely to change following two further appointments.

Scott Munn was brought in as chief football officer earlier this year. He is in charge of all footballing matters and officially started in his role in September.

The most recent arrival is that of Johan Lange, who has joined from Aston Villa and become technical director. Spurs confirmed in their welcome statement that Lange would “have responsibility for recruitment, analytics and talent identification across our senior and academy teams.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He is a welcome addition as we strengthen our football operations.”

In the meantime, Paratici has continued to work in a consultancy capacity. The Athletic says he is well thought of by Levy and his influence on signings such as Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie means he could still have a role.

All that points to the expectation that Levy will take a step back from football matters. He appears to have struck gold with the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as head coach and now he will be hoping he can sit back and watch from afar as Munn, Lange and co flourish in their new roles.
