Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has warned Lewis Hamilton that he expects Max Verstappen to claim in excess of ten World Championships throughout his career in the sport, moving him clear at the top of the record books.

Verstappen claimed this third consecutive World Championship at the Qatar Grand Prix weekend, becoming the first-ever driver to win a title on-track during a Saturday when his second-place finish in the sprint race proved enough to seal his fate.

More concerning for Verstappen’s rivals is the ease at which he clinched the title in 2023. The 26-year-old sits 209 points clear of team-mate and closest challenger Sergio Perez in the standings, and there are still five events left to go on the calendar.

When asked about the debate by TalkSport, Jordan replied: “Well, in my opinion, I’m a little bit biased towards the old guys. I just think Verstappen has had it quite easy coming through – his mother was a brilliant driver, and his father Jos drove for me way back years ago.

We know there was a colour issue, there were all sorts of issues coming through, and his father had three jobs to bring him through to it.

“I think his path, his journey, was a tougher path. So therefore, I’m slightly biased towards Lewis, because I think adversity and all of those things come into play in confidence and will to win and being picked up by the right people. But it’s minimal. The gap between those two is tiny.

More F1… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

“I think Max now, after what we’ve seen this year, he edges in front of Lewis, which in a way, most people never thought that could ever happen. Beware, guys, the best seven-times World Champion Lewis Hamilton and seven-times Michael Schumacher, this kid, first up, he’s gonna push it over 10, no question.”

With three titles already to his name Verstappen is making a beeline for Hamilton and Schumacher’s seven-title record, although the former hasn’t given up hopes of adding an eighth to his personal tally.

Hamilton pushed Verstappen all the way to the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021 and has shown that he still has the pace and consistency required to fight for World Championships, provided Mercedes can produce a car that is more consistent than the W14.
