Manchester United are facing a battle to avoid missing out on teenage sensation Oscar Zambrano after Luton Town moved to the front of the queue to land the starlet dubbed the ‘next Moises Caicedo’. Reports have linked the Red Devils with the highly-rated midfielder, who plays in his native Ecuador for LDU Quito, but Luton have stolen a march after sending scouts to watch the youngster before making a move in January.

Zambrano is one of the latest stars to attract interest after making 29 appearances for his club, as well as featuring for his country at Under-20 level.

The 19-year-old emerged through the same football academy as Chelsea’s £115million record signing Caicedo and inevitable comparisons have been made between the two players. Zambrano was invited for a trial at Ajax a couple of years ago and remains keen on a big move to Europe, while Barcelona have been keeping tabs on his progress.

Hatters chief scout Phil Chapple reportedly flew to Argentina last week to speak to the player after watching him play in a Copa Sudamerica tie against Defensa y Justicia on October 4. Chapple travelled with John Morling, a Luton scout who is an expert on South American talents and previously worked for Brighton.

In any case, the teams remain interested and in contact for when a new market opens.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. United had finalised a £4.5m deal with his club at the time, Independiente del Valle, in January 2021 before they decided to pull out of talks.

Weeks later, Premier League rivals Brighton stole in and got the deal over the line before sending him out on loan to Belgian club Beerschot before he made his debut in the 2021-22 campaign.

Caicedo became an instant hit at the Amex Stadium and United’s mistake looked worse with every game he impressed, with Arsenal and Liverpool both making attempts to sign him for upwards of £75m before Chelsea finally landed him in August in a British transfer record deal. For that reason, United will be keen to ensure he doesn’t slip through the net this time.
