Jadon Sancho is digging his heels in as his Manchester United career stumbles to an embarrassing conclusion, with the club ready to back Erik ten Hag over his strict disciplinary approach. Three of Ten Hag’s players close to Sancho have also reportedly sided with the Dutchman, who has grown used to overcoming adversity during his short reign at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag arrived in Manchester last summer, having spent his entire managerial career primarily as a football coach at Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II, Utrecht and Ajax.

The step up to United was always going to be significant, but even he couldn’t have foreseen the range of issues he would have to manage in his first 16 months at the helm.

From off-field problems regarding Mason Greenwood and Antony to stamping his authority on high-profile names like David de Gea, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo to this season’s injury crisis, Ten Hag has had much on his plate.

His bust-up with Sancho added to a long list, being labelled a liar by his No 25 after excluding him from last month’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal due to training levels.

A resolution to Sancho’s situation will only be more of a boost.
