{"id":295637,"date":"2023-10-09T08:28:04","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T08:28:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=295637"},"modified":"2023-10-09T08:28:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T08:28:04","slug":"mikel-arteta-hits-back-at-gary-nevilles-criticism-of-david-raya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/soccer\/mikel-arteta-hits-back-at-gary-nevilles-criticism-of-david-raya\/","title":{"rendered":"Mikel Arteta hits back at Gary Neville&apos;s criticism of David Raya"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Mikel Arteta hits back at Gary Neville&#8217;s criticism of Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya &#8211; after Sky Sports pundit labelled the Spaniard a &#8216;nervous wreck&#8217; during Gunners&#8217; 1-0 win over Man City<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gary Neville was quick to label David Raya as a &#8216;nervous wreck&#8217; on Sunday\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>However, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta took a different opinion on his performance\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport&#8217;s podcast &#8216;It&#8217;s All Kicking Off!\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has hit back at Gary Neville&#8217;s criticism of goalkeeper David Raya following their 1-0 win over Manchester City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday afternoon, the Gunners triumphed over last season&#8217;s Treble winners thanks to a late Gabriel Martinelli goal, which deflected off the face of City&#8217;s Nathan Ake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, a big talking point from the Emirates was Arteta&#8217;s decision to, once again, start summer signing David Raya in goal ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ramsdale, 25, had been Arsenal&#8217;s first-choice goalkeeper last term but has spent a large portion of this campaign watching on from the sidelines &#8211; despite some shaky moments from Raya.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Against Lens on Tuesday, the former Brentford goalkeeper came under scrutiny after his misplaced pass led to an equalising goal for the French side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/06\/76323731-12609387-image-a-1_1696828942474.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Mikel Arteta (R) praised Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya (L) after their 1-0 win over Man City<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/06\/76305959-12609387-Gary_Neville_has_weighed_in_on_his_opinions_of_Raya_saying_the_S-a-2_1696828960431.jpg\" height=\"426\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville lambasted the goalkeeper during Sunday&#8217;s victory\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>And, after a nervy opening half against Manchester City, Sky Sports co-commentator Neville was quick to question the Spaniard&#8217;s confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the game, Neville said: &#8216;They (City) should have scored. The goalkeeper is all over the place in these first few minutes. He&#8217;s really shaky, Raya.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He&#8217;s just a bit jittery, Raya. He&#8217;s not seeing things as clearly as Arsenal\u00a0fans would like.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, after the match, Arteta jumped to the defence of his goalkeeper and went on to praise how his side &#8216;managed the emotions&#8217; of the match.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think he was excellent,&#8217; Arteta said to Sky Sports. &#8216;The way he controlled the ball.<\/p>\n<p>How dominant the was and how high he played. I love players with courage and David certainly has big ones&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;[City] give you a lot [of problems] and we gave them a lot of issues as well,&#8217; Arteta continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It is not easy to get out. You need the right timing, the right movement, the right moments. I like the courage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You are going to have these [hard] moments against this team. You have to be direct and managed the emotions and make sure you don&#8217;t get caught against this team.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Neville&#8217;s criticisms for Raya continued throughout the first-half after City&#8217;s Julian Alvarez chased down the Arsenal goalkeeper and nearly tackled the ball into the net.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/06\/76323847-12609387-image-a-4_1696829024009.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Raya showed some shaky moments in the first-half but looked at ease in the second-half<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/06\/76323735-12609387-image-a-3_1696829022208.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Manchester City&#8217;s Julian Alvarez (L) nearly tackled the ball into the back of the net at Arsenal<\/p>\n<p>After Raya&#8217;s clearance deflected off Alvarez, Neville insisted: &#8216;I can spot a keeper a mile off that&#8217;s a nervous wreck and there&#8217;s one right in front of you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The mistake in midweek, he&#8217;s carried into this game. He&#8217;s not sharp enough and he&#8217;s very lucky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s quite obvious the goalkeeper is struggling but he&#8217;s still playing it short. They&#8217;re going to get punished if they&#8217;re not careful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;When you can see he&#8217;s struggling as much as he is, just get it forward.
