To the surprise of many, Peter Drury once commentated on darts before making his name in football as fans were left stunned.

The 56-year-old is a staple of English football who began his career with local radio in Leeds before becoming a favourite of football fans thanks to his work with BT Sport. Drury recently replaced Martin Tyler at Sky Sports this season while he also works for the US-based network NBC Sports.

A 30-year career in football has endeared the commentator to sports lovers across the country as fans recently discovered that Drury once worked a darts match between Phil Taylor and Paul Nicholson. 'The Asset' defeated the 16-time world champion in the semi-final of the 2010 Players Championships as the thrilling battle was enhanced by Drury's legendary commentating.

A clip of Nicholson's victory was posted on X with Drury's voice in the background as the caption of the post read: "The world of darts commentary is in dire need of a Peter Drury return" while one fan wrote: "Peter Drury can lend his voice to any sport". While a return to darts may not be on the cards, the Brit had an interview with The Athletic ahead of his debut on Sky Sports and explained what he had hoped to bring to the platform.

"You’ve got people who have been a part of the furniture and when the furniture moves, some people won’t like the change," Drury said following the departure of Martin Tyler. "Sky have presumably employed me because they, broadly speaking, like the way I do it. I don’t want to make it feel as though I’m imposing myself, but I do have to find a way of being myself.

"What I hope I haven’t lost is enthusiasm," he says. "I am excited about every game I go to. So when people hear me being excited, I can assure them that it is authentic. I’m really, really not putting it on and I really am engaged by the narrative. It’s a thrilling thing.

"If you take a couple of steps back and look at it, you might think, ‘What is it you’re getting excited about?’. But when you’re in it, it’s a fabulous thing and I don’t apologise for being really very, very excited about it."
