Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has left his job as D.C. United manager, the MLS franchise has announced. Rooney guided the team to a 2-0 win over New York City in their final regular season game before his exit was announced with the club set to miss out on the MLS Playoffs.

“We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time. This decision creates the avenue for our next General Manager to have the full opportunity to impart a new philosophy and structure onto our sporting operations, which begins with the critical identification of a Head Coach who will best align with this,” said Jason Levien CEO and Co-Chairman of D.C. United.

“We are grateful to Wayne Rooney for all he has done for our club and for soccer in the Nation’s Capital, first as a D.C. United player and captain and most recently as our coach. He remains an important part of the D.C. United family and a valued and cherished friend.”

Rooney leaves with the club ninth in the Eastern Conference standings but set to be knocked out of a playoff place by results elsewhere by teams still yet to play their final matches. A former D.C. United player, Rooney returned to the franchise as manager in July 2022 and finished with a total of 40 points having won 10 matches, drawn 10 and lost 14.

In recent weeks, Rooney spoke of his frustration as talks with the club’s hierarchy over extending his stay never materialized. He gave an honest interview to the Washington Post several weeks ago making his feelings clear.

“I am slightly disappointed and frustrated there has been no contact for two months,” Rooney said. “We asked about a new deal.

“We can sit down and talk about it – we haven’t heard back. Either way, I can take whatever the situation is. I was hoping we would have, either way, at least spoken about it, that hasn’t been the case.

“We asked to sit down and speak, because planning for next season needs to go ahead. So we asked two months ago where everything was at, are we moving forward or not moving forward – if that’s the case from their point of view – and we haven’t heard back.”

More info

Speaking when he was managing the MLS All-Stars against Arsenal in the summer, Rooney outlined his desire to return to Europe as a manager in the future. He’s already been linked with the Birmingham City job if John Eustace departs.

He said in June: “My aspiration is to manage at an elite European club someday, and in those environments, you’re working with very diverse teams, with elite professionals from all over the world. I’ve found I could actually get that experience here, which helps me a lot.

“At DC United, for example, we’ve got players from more than a dozen nations, representing different cultures, religions, and backgrounds. So there’s different challenges and lessons to be gained from that, and working with the All-Stars, the very best MLS has to offer, adds to that immensely.”
