Sheffield United defender Chris Basham was stretched off with a horrific leg injury in the first half of the Blades' away Premier League game against Fulham.

Basham, 35, went down after attempting a cross and his left ankle appeared to bend and give way, no Fulham player was involved in the incident.

The defender received 10 minutes of treatment and left the pitch to a standing ovation from both sets of fans on a stretcher with the aid of oxygen. An Ambulance was on site to take the veteran straight to hospital and in a positive moment, Basham put his thumb up as he left the pitch.

Sheffield United wrote on Twitter: "Jack Robinson replaces Chris Basham who leaves Craven Cottage on a stretcher following a lengthy stoppage in play. We send our best wishes to Bash, and will communicate updates as and when we have them."

While Fulham added on social media: "We've had a lengthy stoppage following a really nasty injury for Chris Basham, who will be stretchered off the pitch. We're all sending you our best wishes, Chris."

Michael Dawson was covering the game on Soccer Saturday as he told host Simon Thomas about the severity of the injury. He said: “We’ve had a nasty injury here, Si.

“He just goes to cross the ball. There may have been a coming together, he may have planted his foot. I struggled to watch it the second time unfortunately. He’s down with a very, very bad injury and best wishes to Chris Basham. We’ve got a stoppage in play, paramedics are on…get well soon Chris.”

Fans were quick to react to Basham’s injury as fans wished him a speedy recovery, with others claiming it was the worst injury they’ve seen. One comment said: “That Basham injury gotta be worst in prem history.” A second commented: “Not for the faint hearted but prayers with Chris Basham wish him a speedy recovery after a horrific injury.” While a third said: “Hope Chris Basham recovers well man. That injury looks horrible.”

Basham will now await a full diagnosis of his injury, but the immediate signs are not good. Sheffield United travelled to Fulham bottom of the table and in need of their first win of the season to lift the pressure off Paul Heckingbottom and his players.

The score remained goalless at half-time after 14 minutes of added injury were signalled.
