Preventing a disaster, Max Verstappen will seal his third consecutive World Championship on Saturday as he creates more F1 history and pushes his name further into the conversation for the greatest of all time.

2023 has been a record-breaking year for the 26-year-old, who is on course to break the record for the highest points tally in a season and the biggest gap between first and second in the standings. These accolades will add to his historic ten-race winning streak between Miami and Monza.

However, for an athlete obsessed with perfection and domination, Verstappen will no doubt have his eyes on the following six records, which are now out of touch for the Red Bull driver… for now.

One record that is out of reach for Verstappen this season is the most pole positions in a season. While Red Bull have been nigh-on untouchable come race day, this has often come at a cost on Saturdays.

Verstappen has nine pole positions to his name so far in 2023 and with six races remaining on the calendar, this leaves him with a maximum prospective tally of 15 poles, which would only bring him level with Sebastian Vettel’s astonishing 2011 total.

After securing his tenth successive victory in Monza earlier this summer, Verstappen was sitting on 15 consecutive podium finishes, but a P5 finish in Singapore ended his impressive streak of top-three finishes.

The legendary Brit finished in the top ten for 48 races running between 2018 and 2020.

Don’t miss… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Verstappen has finished in the points at each of the last 35 races with that record spanning back to the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. If he maintains that record for the remaining six races of the 2023 season then he’ll be well set to challenge Hamilton’s tally in 2024.

These tallies also stand for the record of the most consecutive race finishes. Hamilton’s run came to an end after he missed the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix with Covid-19, while Verstappen is still in with a shot at extending his 35-race streak.

The final record that will remain untouched by Verstappen for at least another season is the percentage of fastest laps in a season, which was set by the legendary Italian Alberto Ascari in 1952 after he notched the fastest tour at six of the eight circuits that year.

Verstappen so far has seven fastest laps to his name in 2023, meaning even if he punched in the fastest times at all six remaining races, he would still boast a percentage of 59, compared to Ascari’s 75 per cent record.

Most consecutive pole positions
