Aston Villa’s players and manager Unai Emery were personally congratulated by the Prince of Wales after their Europa Conference League win.

The Villans got the first win of their European campaign on Thursday night as they beat Zrinjski Mostar of Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0 thanks to captain John McGinn’s 94th minute header.

Prince William was spotted in the stands at Villa Park, sat alongside injured England defender Tyrone Mings, and post-match paid a visit to the home dressing room.

The royal, who is also President of the Football Association, has been a supporter of the Midlands club since he was at school, and has attended many of their significant games over the past few years, including their FA Cup final defeat in 2015.

His visit to the dressing room on Thursday night caused some disruption however, with delaying Emery from his post-match media duties.

But the Spaniard didn’t seem to mind one bit, thanking the future king for his support and revealing what he said in his press conference.

‘[It’s the] third time I met him. He is welcome as he is supporting us, feeling emotion with us,’ Emery told reporters.

‘He met with the players and me and we were speaking about Aston Villa and his wishes for us to do something this year.’

Villa haven’t won a trophy since their League Cup triumph in 1996, but under former Arsenal boss Emery they are well-placed to do so, with the club enjoying a fantastic upturn in form since his arrival a year ago.

They are the favourites to win the Conference League and are fifth in the Premier League table after seven games – just three points off leaders Manchester City.

Spearheading their campaign is forward Ollie Watkins, whose sensational form has earned him a recall to the England squad.
