Legendary racehorse Frankel has gone from superstar of the track to superstud of the stables.

The horse was the highest rated in history after winning all 14 of his races including the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and both the Queen Elizabeth II and Champion Stakes at Ascot to net his owners £3million in prize money.

But that is small change compared to fortune he has raked in since he retired undefeated 11 years ago. For he has become Britain's No1 stud.

The 15-year-old lives in luxury at the 379-acre Banstead Manor Stud near Newmarket where excited owners pay £275,000-a-time for him to roll in the hay with their mares. Frankel bedded 196 last year alone – raking in his owners up to £54million.

He has already sired 31 Group One winners – the highest class of flat race – including 2021 Derby winner Adayar, Hurricane Lane which won the Irish Derby and St Leger that year and last year's (2022) Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe champ Alphinista.

His colt Diego Velasquez is already tipped to win next year's Derby. Simon Mockridge, UK general manager of the Juddmonte Group which owns the stud farm, says Frankel is far more than a champion racehorse. He is a ‘one jump breeder’ with a 90% fertility rate.

Frankel is widely regarded as being one of the greatest racehorses to have ever lived.

After he won the Champion Stakes in his final ever race, the late Sir Henry Cecil had some high praise for Frankel.

"He's the best I've ever had, the best I've ever seen," the legendary horse trainer said in 2012. "I'd be very surprised if there's ever been anything better."
