Frank Lampard could be set to raid his former club Chelsea if the unemployed manager lands a job with Rangers after holding talks to succeed Michael Beale. The 44-year-old has been out of work since his temporary stint as caretaker boss ended miserably at Stamford Bridge. But Lampard is still held in high regard by the supporters and the hierarchy, and those connections could prove to be useful in the January transfer window if he takes over at Ibrox. Express Sport looks at five players he could swoop for if Lampard heads to Glasgow…

Chelsea know they have a talented striker in Broja, but the issue that cannot be ignored is the Albania international is only just coming back from a 10-month lay-off after rupturing his ACL in November last year.

The 22-year-old marked his first start of the season with a fortuitous goal in the 2-0 win over Fulham, but his lively display warranted a goal. And it was notable that Lampard – who joined Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage as a guest pundit – was left impressed with his efforts before he was substituted.

The reality is that the Blues are more likely than not to sign a striker in January, with Dusan Vlahovic, Lautaro Martinez and Victor Osimhen all on their radar. That would demote Broja to third-choice, and few could blame the youngster if he wanted to go somewhere where he has a genuine chance of leading the frontline.

READ MORE Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter ‘makes decision’ on taking over at Rangers[INSIGHT]

Chelsea offloaded 17 players this summer but Sarr was the one player they simply could not get rid of, try as they might. The French defender was a useful squad member under Thomas Tuchel but quickly fell down the pecking order and spent last season on loan with AS Monaco, moving as part of the Benoit Badiashile deal.

However, the French club declined to take up the option to pay £10m for the centre-back, leaving him in limbo at Stamford Bridge. It was reported the Blues would consider terminating his contract if a suitable club came along but a move failed to materialise, and Sarr cannot play league football until January at the earliest.

The 23-year-old could easily train every week and pick up his salary until the end of his contract, but at his age he may prefer to get some games under his belt. And Chelsea may feel that Lampard, who has proved to be a nurturing figure for young players, may be the perfect man to rebuild his career.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

DON’T MISS

Highly-rated defender Gilchrist extended his contract with the club until 2025 after breaking into the first-team squad this summer under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 19-year-old would be realistic, though, about his chances of featuring from now until January and unless the west London club suffer an even worse injury crisis than they have now, Gilchrist’s chances of getting minutes are somewhat slim.

He could yet go out on loan to a lower league club in the coming weeks, but the chance to move to one of Scotland’s biggest clubs – even if it’s just temporary – would do wonders his footballing education.

One of the brightest prospects in Chelsea’s development squad showed that there is a pathway to the first team under Pochettino after making his Premier League debut against Fulham on Monday. It was only for a matter of minutes, but it was a demonstration of how valued the 18-year-old is at Cobham.

Matos only arrived from Norwich City in July for an undisclosed fee but he is making huge strides already with the club in the Premier League 2. Other young talents have gone to Scotland from big clubs and thrived – Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and former Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts are proof of that.

It remains to be seen, though, whether Lampard would give any game time to the youngster, given Rangers’ experienced squad.

At the age of 21, Brooking has reached a crossroads at Chelsea. This is the age the young full-back really needs regular game time at professional level but he is yet to make his debut.

Signed from Reading five years ago, Brooking was listed amongst the substitutes against Fulham. And given his pace and tremendous ability to run with the ball, Rangers will be well aware of his talents after scoring a 50-yard solo goal against Manchester City.

A loan move as understudy to James Tavernier would suit him well, and Lampard would only need to speak to his close friend John Terry to get the lowdown on the promising defender.

Armando Broja
