Manchester United icon Gary Neville has insisted that Liverpool\u2019s statement in response to their VAR blunder was \u201cdangerous\u201d and a \u201cmistake\u201d after the club insisted that sporting integrity was undermined. The Reds were incensed that Luis Diaz\u2019s goal in their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham was disallowed for offside, despite the officials making an error and later admitting that it should have stood.<\/p>\n

PGMOL admitted that a \u201csignificant human error\u201d occurred when VAR was unaware that the on-field decision was offside, before confirming that a check had been completed and Diaz was onside – but the referee was accidentally told to stick with the decision that had already been made.<\/p>\n

In response, Liverpool insisted that they would be exploring a \u201crange of options available\u201d as they felt that \u201cescalation\u201d was necessary after receiving an apology from PGMOL chief Howard Webb, but Neville felt that the club statement was over the top.<\/p>\n

\u201cJurgen Klopp handled the situation well last night after the game,\u201d Neville wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). \u201cMost football fans will have had empathy with what happened and recognised it was wrong!<\/p>\n

Liverpool\u2019s response called for full transparency in the PGMOL\u2019s review of the incident, while the club\u2019s stance on the situation was made perfectly clear in that they would continue to push for further action to take place – after the VAR and assistant VAR for the game were dropped from their duties for Sunday and Monday’s fixtures.<\/p>\n

Liverpool\u2019s statement read: \u201cLiverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL\u2019s admission of their failures last night. It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR. It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat such failings have already been categorised as \u2018significant human error\u2019 is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again. In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n
