Team USA will have revenge on their mind looking ahead to Bethpage in 2025 while Rory McIlroy and co are already dreaming up an unbeaten streak after their demolition of Zach Johnson’s team in Rome. The Northern Irishman was at his very best as he picked up four points out of a possible five to lead the Europeans to glory as USA’s woes across the Atlantic continued.

Major changes are needed in the American team looking ahead to 2025 with Johnson almost certainly not retaining his place at the captain. Players such as Brooks Koepka, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele will all likely be there playing but the door is open for other players to make a claim over the next two years.

One golfer almost certain to not be in with a chance of playing is 15-time major winner Woods. The 47-year-old has had a rough 2023 having not played since withdrawing from The Masters.

But Paul Azinger has indicated that Woods will likely be involved in the next Ryder Cup as USA’s captain. Bethpage is one of several courses to become synonymous with Woods’ career as he obliterated the field at the 2002 US Open round the tough course.

It’s a place Woods knows better than most and there’s arguably no other player who could fire up the American crowd better than arguably the greatest golfer of all time. Woods being named as Team USA’s next captain almost seems a no-brainer and he’s already had some practice in the role.

The American icon was a vice-captain for USA at the 2016 Ryder Cup as Europe were beaten 17-11. He was also captain of the United States Presidents Cup team back in 2019 when they defeated the international team 16-14 while also playing in the event.

While the next Ryder Cup is still two years away, an announcement on the next captain will likely be made in the coming months. Johnson was revealed as USA’s captain in February 2022, just five months after the previous Ryder Cup had finished.

More info

Woods being named as the American team’s next captain would be a huge signal of intent from the USPGA that they have no plans of laying down following their disappointing defeat in Rome. McIlroy has already sparked fighting words during Europe’s celebrations, almost guaranteeing they will retain the Ryder Cup in Bethpage.

“I’ve said this for the last probably six or seven years to anyone that will listen: I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup,’’ McIlroy said. “And that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.’’

But Woods might be the very man who can silence McIlroy and co looking ahead to the 45th Ryder Cup. It’s inevitable Woods will captain the Americans at least once. Now seems like the time for that to happen.
