Manchester United reportedly remain keen on signing Nice central defender Jean-Clair Todibo after a transfer failed to materialise during the summer transfer window.

Mail Sport reported back in August that the Red Devils were viewed Todibo as an option at centre-back, as Harry Maguire considered a move to West Ham.

The England centre-half ultimately stayed at the club, despite David Moyes’ side tabling bids of around £30million.

Man United still remain keen on Todibo, with Fabrizio Romano reporting the club could follow up on their interest during the January transfer window.

A move would likely again hinge on whether Maguire remains at the club, with Man United’s former club captain having slipped down the pecking order at centre back.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Benfica teenager Antonio Silva are reportedly among other options Man United could pursue besides Todibo.

A move for Tapsoba could be complicated by the defender signing a new contract earlier this month, committing his future to the Bundesliga side until 2028.

Todibo had discussed reports of Man United’s interest earlier this month, revealing he did not want to make a ‘mistake’ when deciding his future.

‘I experienced it differently from my previous situations in my career. My thinking was much more in-depth, thoughtful. I didn’t want to make a mistake in my choice. I remained very calm,’ Todibo told L’Equipe.

‘Reflection is much more important than when I started. I’m waiting to be presented with the complete project.

‘What is expected of me? Why am I coming? You shouldn’t arrive at a club like that. I know what I have at Nice. Why go into the unknown? So, everything must be clear. My first transfer, I was 18 years old. The thinking was not as thorough.’

Todibo had acknowledged a move to a ‘top club’ would boost his prospects at international level with France.

The 23-year-old has made 108 appearances at Nice, who he joined from Barcelona in 2021.

Todibo, who began his career at Toulouse, has enjoyed a strong start to the season helping Nice to keep three clean sheets in six Ligue 1 matches.

The unbeaten start to the season has seen Nice occupy second place in Ligue 1, one point behind surprise leaders Stade Brestois.
