Stan Wawrinka has hit out at the International Tennis Federation after a viral video on social media highlighted the low bounce on a hard-court surface. The courts at the Futures Tournament in Albuquerque were slammed by players for being ‘unplayable’.

British rising star Finn Bass scathed about the ITA on social media platform X, alleging that there is little ‘care’ for player welfare due to the state of the courts at the tournament. Bass told the governing body to do better to protect the players.

“Do better… @ITFTennis @usta. Completely unacceptable conditions here at M15 Albuquerque, can evidently see the courts are not playable in any way shape or form,” the youngster wrote.

“Absolutely no respect or care for player welfare and how much money we spend to compete in these tournaments.”

The post was picked up by former World No 3 Wawrinka, who amplified Bass’s frustration with the ITF. He asked if the federation had any comment to make about a young player’s fury over the conditions of the court.

The Davis Cup now features a group stage with matches played across different cities. Wawrinka’s Switzerland played France in Manchester.

“Thank you @3gerardpique @ITFTennis! Davis Cup France vs Switzerland in Manchester lol,” he sarcastically tweeted to the former Barcelona defender.

Despite some fiery social media posts, Wawrinka has not quite been in the same form on the court. He was knocked out of the Astana Open by American Marcos Giron and was disappointed to lose against Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of the US Open.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Speaking at the US Open last month, he said: “Physically I think I’m okay. I’m old, of course, but I feel good. I was feeling good on the court against younger players.

“I also know the day I stop I will never find those emotions anywhere. I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I think it’s an amazing life, and we are lucky to be tennis players and to travel the world, to play in the biggest tournaments. If you [are] still passionate about something, you shouldn’t stop or change.

“I never forgot why I started playing tennis and what I was dreaming of when I was young was to play the US Open, to play those Grand Slams, big tournaments, ATP tournaments, to be there. I’m happy I can still play at that level.”
