Sky Sports were forced to make their first apology live on air for language used by Shane Lowry during his foursomes match in the opening day of the 2023 Ryder Cup. Lowry and Sepp Straka were leading the charge for Team Europe on a near-perfect start to Friday’s foursomes in the morning.

The European duo moved four up in their match against Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa through nine holes, putting them on the verge of sealing a point. The only thing likely stopping Lowry and Straka from seeing out their match was going to be errors creeping into their game.

And Lowry knew he’d made a horrible error on the 10th tee that ultimately cost them their advantage. The Irishman saw his drive leak out to the right and drop into the water to give the Americans the advantage.

Microphones picked up Lowry shouting “f***” as he let out his frustrations at finding the hazard. Sky Sports golf presenter Nick Dougherty had to apologise for the bad language that was picked up by the microphones on the tee of the 10th hole.

“Apologies for any bad language you might have picked up there from the disappointment from Lowry,” he said. The mistake proved costly as Straka had to drop and failed to make the green with his approach while Morikawa had no such issues.

Lowry needed to chip in off the green to give his pairing a chance of saving a half, but fizzed his shot past the flag and through to the fringe. Europe ended up conceding the hole as their advantage was cut to three with eight holes to play.
