Paul Scholes tried to convince a Wales rugby star to switch his allegiance to England but to no avail.

Louis Rees-Zammit, who is currently starring for the Welsh at the World Cup in France, once dated the daughter of the Manchester United legend, Alicia. Paul, a keen rugby fan, took a keen interest in the wing’s career and even watched him live in Gallagher Premiership action for Gloucester.

After a match in 2020, Scholes posted a picture of him on Instagram and cheekily quipped: “The England debut can't be far off.” But playing for Wales was always the priority for Penarth-born Rees-Zammit, who also happens to be a massive Manchester United fan.

He told the BBC: “I used to date his daughter so it was a running joke. He always used to try to make me play for England but I wasn't having any of it.”

Despite getting to know Scholes Sr well, Cristiano Ronaldo is Rees-Zammit’s all-time United hero, to such an extent he even owns a pair of Ronaldo boxer shorts. The 22-year-old paid tribute to the Old Trafford icon great by performing the ‘Siu’ celebration after scoring a try against Portugal.

“Ronaldo is my favourite player," said Rees-Zammit. "I wear his boxers and I dress like him. And I thought why not do his celebration as well. A few of my mates back home wanted me to do it.

“They're massive football fans and obviously we don't play Portugal very often. So I said if I scored, I'd do it for them. I saw there was no-one in backfield and I put a grubber through and thankfully I got the bounce.”
