Following his two crashes at the Japanese Grand Prix, Logan Sargeant has now cost Williams an estimated £3.2 million ($3.9m) in crash damage this season. This adds up to over three times his believed salary.

The young Floridian was promoted to F1 ahead of schedule having signed for the Williams driver academy ahead of his rookie Formula 2 season. Sargeant had previously taken McLaren’s star rookie Oscar Piastri all the way in the battle for the Formula 3 title.

After completing a streak of FP1 appearances at the back end of 2022 and confirming a fourth-place finish in the F2 standings, Sargeant accumulated enough super license points to make the step up to F1. He was therefore announced as Nicholas Latifi’s replacement at Williams for 2023 on a one-year deal.

Unfortunately, a further 15 races on from his F1 debut in Bahrain, Sargeant has yet to claim his maiden points and a string of costly crashes have placed further strain on his future with the team.

This figure represents over three times his annual salary which, according to RacingNews365, stands at £820,000.

This figure stands as the most of any F1 driver this season and over £1m more than Lance Stroll, whose £2.13m worth of damage was inflated by his terrifying crash at the final corner of the Marina Bay street circuit two weeks ago.

Sargeant’s crashes are also threatening to set Williams back in their development for 2024, with team principal James Vowles telling Sky Sports: “We’ve had more attrition than was expected, it’s fair to say.

More F1… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. But it will mean we’ll have to divert attention away from other items while producing more spare parts before we get to the end of the year.”

The American rookie was always going to be a long-term project for Williams but a flurry of crashes since the summer break has piled on the pressure. The 22-year-old’s plight has not been helped by the performances of fellow rookies Piastri and Liam Lawson, both of whom have stolen the spotlight this year.

With reigning F2 champion Felipe Drugovich a serious contender for his seat and Jost Capito – the man who brought him into the team – now out of the equation, Vowles will likely be forced to pull the trigger if Sargeant doesn’t produce results fast.
