Iga Swiatek made it clear that Wimbledon was going to be her biggest roadblock as she was quizzed over completing the career Grand Slam. Aged just 22, the Pole already has four Major titles to her name – three from the French Open and one at the US Open. But she took the pressure off her shoulders when it came to lifting trophies at all four Slams, saying she had years to adjust to the grass.

Swiatek’s Grand Slam season recently came to an end in the fourth round of the US Open, a disappointing exit for the 2022 champion at the tournament. The 22-year-old was still able to defend her crown at the French Open this year, the third time that she picked up the title on the Parisian clay.

It made her the joint-second most decorated active women’s tennis player at the Grand Slams, tied with Naomi Osaka on four while Venus Williams holds seven. Swiatek will no be hoping to add more trophies to her Grand Slam haul next season – especially at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, which would allow her to complete the career Slam by winning all four at least once.

But the 15-time title winner isn’t putting any pressure on herself to achieve it, as she confessed that Wimbledon would be the tricky one. “Oh my god, when? I don’t think I can answer you specifically. Um, as soon as possible,” she smiled when asked when she would seal the career Slam ahead of this week’s WTA 500 in Tokyo.

She continued: “Well for sure, I think I need a couple of more years to learn how to play on grass better. So, I’m not rushing it you know.”

Wimbledon has so far been her worst Grand Slam tournament, as she reached the quarter-final for the first time this year. In comparison, she has a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open as well as title wins at the other two Majors. Swiatek was happy to take her time, however, as she confessed that she still had plenty of years left on the professional tennis tour.

“I’m 22, so I still have a lot of time probably, more than like 10 years. So I’m doing my best to win every tournament, every tournament I play at. But yeah, I’m not rushing it because I’ve already won four Slams,” she added.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Because when I was younger, I didn’t know it was going to be possible for me. So really, I’m taking it easy.”

For now, Swiatek is focusing on this week’s Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. She is the top seed at the event and received a bye into the second round where she faces qualifier Mai Hontama. The tournament marks the Pole’s first since she relinquished the world No 1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka after 75 straight weeks at the top.
