LIV Golf defector Bryson DeChambeau has hit out at Team USA’s Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson after not being named in this year’s team. The Californian golfer claims that being left off the team sheet “does sting a little bit” and believes that he was snubbed due to his allegiance to the Saudi-backed tour.

DeChambeau joined LIV Golf back in June 2022, despite declaring that he would remain loyal to the PGA Tour several times. The eight-time PGA Tour winner has impressed this season with wins at both the LIV Golf Invitationals in Chicago and Greenbrier, alongside six top-20 finishes.

Sadly the 30-year-old missed out on the chance to feature on the 12-man Ryder Cup team after he wasn’t selected via Johnson’s wild card picks. DeChambeau was also unable to qualify on points, but believes that he was mainly overlooked due to his allegiance to LIV.

Although Team Europe refuses to allow LIV players to take part at the Ryder Cup, having been forced to give up their DP World Tour memberships, Team USA has an exemption. This year will see fellow LIV player Brooks Koepka take part for the United States, but DeChambeau still believes he should have been considered.

“If you look at it, it would have been nice to at least just have a call,” DeChambeau said fresh from his win at LIV Chicago. “There are numerous people that I think Zach [Johnson] should have called out here, and we didn’t get that.

“I understand, I get it, but we’re [LIV Golf players] nothing different. We’re still competing. We’re still working super hard to be the best we possibly can be. I don’t know if it was back ended or whatnot. I’m not up to make that discussion available. I have no idea what it was or who made that decision, but it would have been nice for them to consider us more because we’re pretty damn good out here.”

DeChambeau went on to claim that he would have been a vital player for the USA team, despite Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson all finishing with higher points so far this season. “Brooks [Koepka] is obviously going to kill it for Team USA next week and excited for the team, but yeah, it definitely does sting a little bit,” he added.

More info

“Say what you want, we’re still golfers, and I personally think that given the way I played this week, I could have definitely racked up some points for Team USA.”

Another LIV golfer who impressed this season is Talor Gooch who also missed out on the call-up despite three LIV Golf wins this year. However, Johnson has defended his decision claiming that not everyone who missed out can receive a phone call, no matter which Tour they play for.

“I called the gentlemen that were in the fold on making the team in points,” he said. “You’d have to go down the list – I don’t remember my last phone call on the list, but it was probably in the top 22-25 range on guys that earned points.”

“The way I see it, all the guys that do not play on the PGA Tour had an opportunity to earn their way, or at least be in the realm of complete discussion, and Brooks Koepka put himself in that position with his play.”

The Ryder Cup starts today at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
