Premier League fans were left baffled after Newcastle's opener against Sheffield United stood despite Anthony Gordon's clear handball.

Eddie Howe's Magpies ran riot at Bramall Lane on Sunday (September 24) afternoon, with eight different scorers contributing to an 8-0 win and setting a new Prem record. The first was midfielder Sean Longstaff, who turned home first time from a Gordon pull back.

A VAR check was held on the goal, with a question mark over whether the ball had gone out of play. Replays showed it had stayed in – and also that Gordon had handled the ball before taking a touch and finding his team-mate.

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

£22 a month

Fans were certain it'd be ruled out as a result – but it stood, much to their bemusement. One took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: "Regardless of whether the ball is in or out, he’s used his hand to keep it in. Surely it’s handball? Not even sure of the rules anymore tbh."

"This league is hilarious, rules changing every week," commented a second, while a third fumed: "Gordon's handball literally keeps the ball in play. What is wrong with these officials? Every week." And a fourth questioned: "What even is VAR anymore."

What do you think of the handball rule? Let us know in the comments section below

"Brilliant in the NBA like," joked a fifth, before a sixth asked: "Anyone got an explanation for this not being a handball!?"

The handball law was changed in the Premier League two years ago ahead of the 2021/22 season. It reads: "If an attacking player’s accidental handball immediately precedes another player scoring, the goal will now be awarded, when last season it was likely to have been ruled out. However, a player will still be penalised if he commits an accidental handball immediately before scoring himself."

So if Gordon, who was deemed to have not deliberately handled, had gone on to score himself, the goal would've been ruled out, but because he played the ball to Longstaff VAR didn't intervene. Get it?
