Roger Federer believes that the future of tennis is looking bright, even if it is carrying on without him. The 20-time Grand Slam champion is in Vancouver this week for the Laver Cup, where Team World are defending their title for the very first time against Team Europe.

Federer ended his illustrious career in the international team competition 12 months ago but has returned as a guest and will see the one year anniversary of his retirement recognised in an on-court ceremony before he conducts the coin toss for the final match of day one.

With no matches to prepare for himself, the 42-year-old superstar has had plenty of time to speak to fans and reporters in Canada. Whilst talking to Eurosport, he shared his view on the future of the sport in the post-Federer era and picked out one player in particular who he is expecting to continue to shine.

He also revealed his regret at not having the chance to face some of the rising names on the ATP Tour, including Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. Federer said: “Current tennis looks good to me. If I just look over what Coco Gauff did at the US Open. It was highly special and unique… She is incredible.”

He added: “On the men’s side, we have some great moments. Novak [Djokovic] re-writing history, Alcaraz winning Wimbledon, [Daniil] Medvedev played fantastic in New York. Young guys coming through, a generation I didn’t play [against] at all… [Holger] Rune, [Jannikl] Sinner, and Alcaraz. Unfortunately, I missed playing against them.

“The future looks bright, the game will always evolve, and the good thing is that I really enjoy watching and still following a lot of the results.”

Although Federer is attending this year’s Laver Cup as a guest and spectator, he has already made it abundantly clear that he would very much like to return as the captain of Team Europe in the future, having helped them win the trophy as a player on three previous occasions.

I’m happy if World wins, don’t get me wrong, but somehow I can feel it deep inside, I want Europe to win. I like being in the tennis sphere. Maybe one day I’ll be the captain of the team.

“There’s no plans as of now, but I think that could be quite nice.”

The sixth edition of the Laver Cup commences on Friday at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada and runs until Sunday, September 24.
