Chelsea will be regretting their decision to loan out Romelu Lukaku just weeks after agreeing to send him to AS Roma for a reunion with Jose Mourinho. The Blues were forced to allow the exiled striker to leave on a temporary deal, rather than a permanent one, after Lukaku held firm in deciding his next club. But a recent change in representation for the Belgian suggests Chelsea may be left to rue their transfer dealings.

On Thursday, US sports agency Roc Nation – owned by rapper Jay-Z – decided to drop Lukaku from their roster of players after five years together. Reports suggested that Lukaku had become a ‘polarising figure’ among clubs, players and managers, making him a less marketable asset than he was previously.

The Daily Telegraph report that Roc had played a key role in convincing Todd Boehly to loan Lukaku back to Inter Milan just 10 months after his £97.5million move to Stamford Bridge. He had scored just eight league goals before a fallout with Thomas Tuchel led to his eventual exile in west London in his second spell with the club.

They had been instrumental, too, in helping the 30-year-old join the Giallorossi in a convoluted loan deal, which also saw him vastly reduce his Chelsea salary for the final three years of his contract.

Lukaku was told he was not part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans and the feeling was mutual for him, given his comments about wanting to stay with Inter Milan.

However, he grew impatient over the Italian club’s failure to seal a permanent transfer and began talks with Juventus, who were willing to meet Chelsea’s £40m demands. Their fans made their feelings crystal clear, holding up a banner urging Lukaku not to join them, and he gradually decided to sign for Roma.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. However, he made it clear he would snub a lucrative switch to Saudi Arabia as he was set on returning to Italy, forcing Chelsea into yet another loan deal and kicking the can down the road.

He has already endeared himself to the Roma fans, scoring the winner in their 2-1 win at Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday to add to his strike in the 7-0 demolition of Empoli on Sunday. But Chelsea will see it as a missed opportunity to sell him once for all.

Now, they must wait for further developments as he chooses his next representative, who could again play a pivotal part in deciding his future.
