Daniel Levy has playfully called out James Maddison for driving a “red car” to training. The Tottenham chairman has jokingly asked the midfielder to change the colour of his motor as Spurs prepare for the North London derby this weekend.

Maddison has got off to a flying start to his career at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since signing this summer from Leicester City for £40million. The English playmaker has recorded two goals and two assists in his first five games for the club and was named the Premier League’s Play of the Month for August.

But his fine form won’t get him off the hook with Levy after committing a mortal sin by driving a car to the Hotspur Way Training Ground sporting the same colour as that of their arch-rivals Arsenal. “James needs to learn that he can’t come to the training ground in a red car. I’ve told him. He’ll learn,” quipped Levy at a recent fans forum.

Clearly, his loyalties lie with Tottenham though. The 26-year-old has already affirmed that he wants to establish himself as a club legend and has set his sites on emulating his hero Paul Gascoigne.

“My dad used to put football video montages together,” he told the Sun. “He is a graphic designer and is good with computers – and Gazza features a lot. Before you become a professional, you’re a fan and I loved players who had personality, players who had a bit of cheekiness about them, more than your bog-standard…

“Gazza was a perfect example. I remember a clip where the cameras are going along during the national anthem and it gets to him and he sticks his tongue out and starts messing around with the camera and going all bog-eyed.

That’s why I like interacting with fans and showing my personality. I don’t know if you saw the clip of me moving the ball out from the corner with the Bournemouth fans – it’s stuff like that which I enjoy doing, that keeps me hungry.

“I like the theatre element of almost being the villain. That’s how I enjoyed watching it and that’s how I enjoy playing it. But it’s not a conscious thing to try and be the showman. That’s just how I am. I go for a roast dinner with my family and I like to be the main man.”
