Arsenal enjoyed a dream return to the Champions League after six and a half years away by thumping PSV 4-0.

First-half goals from Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus were complemented by a sumptuous strike from Martin Odegaard after the break.

It was a display of pace, power, and football intelligence from the Gunners, though their Eredivisie opposition offered little in the way of resistance.

But there are other things you may not have realised about this encounter.

Martin Odegaard turned in a stunning performance to lead Arsenal to a 4-0 win over PSV

The Emirates Stadium could not wait a minute earlier for the return of Champions League football, following a six-year absence.

Up to two hours before kick-off, rehearsals of the competition’s theme anthem from stadium speakers could be heard on the main road outside.

You couldn’t blame them. The noise inside was also further raised compared to as per, nights like this having been truly missed.

Ten minutes before kick-off, the North London club had put on a light show. On the screen were clips from yesteryear; from Dennis Bergkamp’s wondergoal against Newcastle, to the exploits of Thierry Henry and Ian Wright.

The clips were interspersed by a narrator, one line poignantly reading, ‘We have to be dominant, we have to show aggression’.

It was almost a reminder ahead of such a big night.

Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya could be seen warming up together, the former helping prepare his team-mate, including a big hug. There was no awkwardness between the pair, but the predicament built by Mikel Arteta’s dropping of Ramsdale two games in a row could not help but be thought of.

David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale exchanged a hug despite the selection battle between them

Oleksandr Zinchenko is known for his modern inverted role, where he moves into midfield from left back. Today he still made those forays forward but was seen closer to the touchline in a role typical of a left back.

He followed the remit well, but it was no surprise to see him depart on 58 minutes. The sheer stamina required was taxing for sure.

By 30 minutes, nine shots at goal, six on target, had been registered by Arsenal. The noisy pocket of away PSV fans had become silent. Not goalkeeper Walter Benitez though, growing further irate with his defence after each goal.

He has been used to goals flying in at the other end of late, PSV having scored eight in their previous two matches — conceding zero.

Almost 2,400 days passed between Arsenal’s last Champions League goal and Saka’s

Bukayo Saka’s goal was the Gunners’ first in the competition since a Theo Walcott strike against Bayern Munich in March 2017 — 2,388 days ago. Tonight was Saka’s Champions League debut, too.
