It didn't take long for Harry Kane to get off the mark for Bayern Munich in Europe – though Manchester United may argue his first Champions League goal for the club shouldn't have stood.

Bayern were awarded a penalty at the Allianz Arena after Christian Eriksen was adjudged to have handled the ball in his box early on in the second half. It was a hammer-blow for Erik ten Hag's men considering they went in at the break trailing 2-0 and had only just halved the deficit thanks to Rasmus Hojlund's maiden goal for United.

And the penalty was that much more difficult to accept due to the manner in which Eriksen was punished. Dayot Upamecano's attempted header back across the box bulleted off the arm of Eriksen, who was clearly in the process of attempting to take it out of the way.

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher remarked that United appeared to be in the clear when his screen showed that the VAR review had resulted in a 'no penalty' decision. However, the footage was reviewed once more as referee Glenn Nyberg was instructed to take a look himself.

Kane stepped up to the mark and powered a third goal of the evening past Andre Onana, who committed a clanger and allowed Leroy Sane to bag Bayern's first. Serge Gnabry added the second for the hosts, but it was the third that may have hurt the most given Hojlund halved the deficit just minutes prior.

And United fans were up in arms with the decision, with one social media user suggesting the penalty 'should never have stood'. TNT co-commentator Owen Hargreaves – who played for both United and Bayern – struggled to wrap his head around the decision and said Eriken had been hard done by.

"Shame on Christian Eriksen for *checks notes* having arms attached to his body," joked one disgruntled United supporter. "He [Upamecano] literally headed it two inches away from Eriksen," complained another. "What’s he meant to do??? We’ve been ROBBED."

Two more goals from Casemiro kept United in the match at time, though Mathys Tel's strike to temporarily put the hosts 4-2 ahead ended up being the decider. Scoring three goals at the Allianz is a significant achievement, not the United will have anything to show for it as they return to England.

The gravity of the penalty decision perhaps can't be understated given it came at a time when United had their tails up and might have fancied themselves to draw level. The visitors nonetheless almost did so following Casemiro's late interventions, pulling two goals back either side of Mathys Tel scoring the hosts' fourth.

Kane's goal will have hurt United all the more given Kane might have been part of their squad if they had the funds handy this summer. As it goes, however, the former Tottenham talisman came back to haunt the Red Devils thanks to a hellish lack of good luck.
