A goalscoring goalkeeper scored three times in the Champions League – and they all came against the same club.

Hans-Jorg Butt is a legend of German football having scored an incredible 26 times in the Bundesliga with the likes of Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen and, latterly, Bayern Munich. While he wasn’t afraid to go up for corners late on when required, he was especially well-known for his prowess from the penalty spot, where most of his goals came.

He played in the Champions League for the aforementioned German trio and scored for each in Europe’s top club competition. And incredibly all three goals came against Italian giants Juventus.

The goals, all penalties, spanned almost a decade with Butt first scoring for Hamburg in a thrilling 4-4 draw against Juve in 2000/01. His next Champions League goal came for Leverkusen. On that occasion, it was the only goal of the game.

Finally, having joined Bayern at the age of 34, he netted for the Bavarian giants in the 2009/10 Champions League – a stonking 4-1 away win. Butt wasn’t infallible from the spot though as he saw one saved later the same season in the Bundesliga. Butt was in goal for the 2010 Champions League final, which Bayern lost 2-0 to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan in Madrid.

Butt won four caps for his country and was third-choice keeper at Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup behind Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann. He retired from the game in 2012 and was briefly head of Bayern's academy before resigning.

Goalscoring keepers have been in the news this week after Lazio stopper Ivan Provedel netted an equaliser deep in injury time as his side claimed a dramatic 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico. The hosts looked to be heading for a narrow defeat in their opening Group E clash after Pablo Barrios fired the visitors into a 29th-minute lead.

But under instructions to go up for a corner in the fifth minute of added time, Provedel continued to loiter in the box before leaping to glance a Luis Alberto cross past his opposite number Ivo Grbic.

Provedel’s goal was just the sixth by a goalkeeper in the Champions League and only the second from open play, after Sinan Bolat scored for Standard Liege against AZ Alkmaar in 2009.
