Arsenal make their return to the Champions League on Wednesday night, having not featured in the competition since 2017. The Gunners, then managed by Arsene Wenger, were cruelly put to the sword by Bayern Munich in the round of 16 the last time they featured on the big stage, losing 10-2 on aggregate. Express Sport takes a look at where each member of that squad are now, six years on…

David Ospina – The goalkeeper left Arsenal in 2019 for Napoli, spending two years in the Serie A. Ospina then joined Saudi side Al Nassr and shares the dressing room with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane.

Hector Bellerin – The defender fell out of favour in 2021 and joined Real Betis on loan. The Spanish full-back then spent time with Barcelona and Sporting before making the move to Betis permanently over the summer.

Shkodran Mustafi – Now an unemployed free agent, the defender has struggled since leaving Arsenal in 2021. He spent a season at Schalke after his move before joining Levante on a two-year deal, making just 14 appearances for the club.

Lauren Koscielny – The ex-France international joined Bordeaux in 2022 and has remained at the club ever since, now in a non-playing capacity.

Nacho Monreal – Now retired, Monreal returned to Spain to join Real Sociedad in 2019 and made 55 appearances for the club over the course of three years.

Granit Xhaka – The midfielder’s time at the Emirates Stadium was a rollercoaster, and he bowed out on a positive note this summer when signing for Bayer Leverkusen.

Don’t miss… Arsenal send scouts on lower-league mission with two teenagers catching the eye[LATEST]

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – The midfielder left the Gunners at the end of the season to join Liverpool in search of more regular opportunities. Having made 146 appearances for the Reds, he left as a free agent this summer and has since joined Besiktas.

Aaron Ramsey – Having left the club in 2019, the playmaker has enjoyed spells at Juventus, Nice and Rangers before returning to boyhood club Cardiff in the Championship this summer.

Theo Walcott – The academy product’s time in north London came to an end in 2018 when he opted to join Everton. The winger then returned to Southampton in 2021 and recently hung up his boots, aged 34, in favour of forging a punditry career.

Olivier Giroud – Still regarded as one of the most underrated No 9s in Europe, Giroud currently plays for AC Milan. He spent three years at Chelsea prior to joining the Serie A side, helping them to win the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

Alexis Sanchez – The winger went from hero to zero after forcing a move from Arsenal to Manchester United. The Chilean flopped at Old Trafford before joining Inter Milan, who he re-joined recently having spent the 2022/23 campaign with Marseille.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Petr Cech – The goalkeeper retired in 2019 to become a technical and performance advisor at Chelsea, before being forced out of the door by Todd Boehly last year. Cech also plays semi-pro ice hockey and recently joined Division 1 side Oxford Chief Stars.

Gabriel Paulista – Having failed to make a significant impact at the Emirates, the defender joined Valencia in 2017 and has remained at the club since.

Kieran Gibbs – The left-back joined West Brom in 2017 after falling down the pecking order at Arsenal. He spent four years with the Baggies before joining Inter Miami, where he retired and joined their media team – missing the chance to share the pitch with Lionel Messi.

Francis Coquelin – Now 32, the midfielder plays for Villarreal after signing for the La Liga outfit from rivals Valencia in 2020.

Mesut Ozil – After a public disagreement with Mikel Arteta, Arsenal mutually terminated his contract in 2021 to allow him to join Fenerbahce. Just 18 months later, his contract was terminated there too and Ozil joined rivals Istanbul Basaksehir and retired after a year with the club.

Lucas Perez – The Spanish forward has spent time at five different clubs since leaving Arsenal, having made just eleven appearances at the Emirates. Perez joined Deportivo for the fourth time in his career earlier this summer, having paid £400,000 to Cadiz in order to release him from his contract.
