{"id":292556,"date":"2023-09-15T17:34:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T17:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=292556"},"modified":"2023-09-15T17:34:23","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T17:34:23","slug":"andy-murray-breaks-down-in-tears-after-davis-cup-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/tennis\/andy-murray-breaks-down-in-tears-after-davis-cup-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"Andy Murray breaks down in tears after Davis Cup victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Andy Murray breaks down in tears after Davis Cup victory over Leandro Riedi&#8230; as he reveals he missed his grandmother&#8217;s funeral to play the match for Great Britain<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andy Murray beat Switzerland&#8217;s Leonardo Riedi 6-7 6-4 6-4 in the Davis Cup<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He broke down in tears, revealing he missed his grandmother&#8217;s funeral to play\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Murray devoted the win to her and apologised to family for not being with them<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Andy Murray broke down in tears following his win for Great Britain at the Davis Cup after revealing that he had missed his grandmother&#8217;s funeral to play in the match.<\/p>\n<p>The double Wimbledon champion let his emotions flow after a gruelling 6-7 6-4 6-4 victory over Switzerland&#8217;s Leonardo Riedi put GB 1-0 up with two to play in the qualifying group for November&#8217;s finals.<\/p>\n<p>The subject had arisen after on court interviewer Naomi Broady drew attention to the presence of a 90 year-old lady in the crowd who was watching her first ever live tennis match.<\/p>\n<p>Murray struggled to muster a reply as he told the crowd of more than 9,000 that he was missing the funeral of his paternal grandmother &#8211; Ellen, mother of his father Willie &#8211; to fulfil his commitment to the team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He apologised for not being there and dedicated his win to her, drawing prolonged applause from Manchester&#8217;s AO Arena.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/15\/17\/75480511-0-image-a-1_1694793665777.jpg\" height=\"411\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Andy Murray broke down in tears following his win for Great Britain at the Davis Cup after revealing that he had missed his grandmother&#8217;s funeral to play in the match\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/15\/17\/75480907-12523573-image-a-10_1694794293552.jpg\" height=\"440\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Murray struggled to get his words out and\u00a0apologised to his family for not being at the funeral<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;Today is a tough day for me. It&#8217;s my gran&#8217;s funeral today. I&#8217;m sorry to my family that I&#8217;m not able to be there. Gran, that one&#8217;s for you.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>His match had been a difficult encounter as he tried to defuse the unpredictable power of world number 152 Riedi, who hit 52 winners, mixed in with 67 unforced errors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Murray broke for 3-2 in the decider and just about managed to hold off his opponent to clinch the win in three hours and 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was ridiculous the way he was returning, the match could easily have gone the other way but I kept fighting,&#8217;
