{"id":292431,"date":"2023-09-13T21:34:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T21:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=292431"},"modified":"2023-09-13T21:34:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T21:34:16","slug":"draper-continues-us-open-form-with-superb-start-to-davis-cup-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/tennis\/draper-continues-us-open-form-with-superb-start-to-davis-cup-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Draper continues US Open form with superb start to Davis Cup career"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Jack Draper enjoys superb start to Davis Cup career after straight-sets win over Thanasi Kokkinakis&#8230; while Dan Evans upsets Australian number one Alex de Minaur to give GB unassailable lead against Australia<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Draper\u2019s excellent form at the US Open was transported with a win in Davis Cup<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He beat Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7 6-3 7-6 on his debut in the tournament<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Manchester United fan was playing in Manchester as he impressed\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jack Draper\u2019s excellent form at the US Open was transported across the Atlantic when he made a superb start to his Davis Cup career in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>With Great Britain trying to come through the four-team group to qualify for November\u2019s Davis Cup finals, Captain Leon Smith handed the 21 year-old his first start ahead of Cam Norrie and Andy Murray.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester United fan Draper did not disappoint after his fourth round showing at Flushing Meadows last week, defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7 6-3 7-6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dan Evans then upset Australian number one Alex de Minaur 6-1 1-6 6-4 to give GB an unassailable lead with the doubles to play.<\/p>\n<p>Both matches were of a high quality, and played out in front of the nearly 10,000 fans at the AO Arena who came out on a Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/19\/75396307-12514949-image-a-25_1694628245303.jpg\" height=\"440\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jack Draper\u2019s excellent form at the US Open was transported across the Atlantic<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/19\/75396295-12514949-image-a-23_1694628237332.jpg\" height=\"426\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Manchester United fan\u00a0defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7 6-3 7-6 in Manchester<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/19\/75396285-12514949-image-a-24_1694628239543.jpg\" height=\"415\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the win, he revealed how proud he was to play his first Davis Cup match<\/p>\n<p>Draper\u2019s win took just shy of three hours, with the Surrey southpaw missing out on a set point before losing the opener 8-6 in a tiebreak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the deciding set he needed to break back when the Aussie served for the match at 5-4.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sudden death tiebreak was desperately tight, but on his way to serving 24 aces Draper came back from 2-4 to rattle off the last five points in a composed display before a partisan crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They got me over the line, it wasn\u2019t an easy match,\u2019 he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was amazing to play my first Davis Cup tie in the UK, I\u2019m just happy that Leon trusted me and put me out here.
